The Pigeon pose is a powerful thigh stretch that requires high mobility in the hip joint. It also stretches the front and back lines, depending on the back position.
The Pigeon pose is very commonly practiced, yet not everyone is aware of the high injury potential when a person is practicing the pose with limited mobility or too aggressively.
It’s important to understand the challenge in this pose and know how to handle it, both for beginners and advanced practitioners and yoga teachers.

    Thanks. My hip and knee are kinda ok. Most of my pain is in the foot … to be more accurate I feel and intense pull in my ankle.

    I finally got into lotus position but now my knees have felt extremely lose ever since (been like a day) is this a good sign that they are opening up or a bad sign that they are hurt?

    It's not just because it's the symbol of yoga- which sounds superficial- but for instance as one who sits zazen every day (we put a cushion under the rear)
    the full lotus is really the ideal posture. Recently I had an inflamed knee and tried to sit cross-legged on a higer cushion instead- but I kept slumping or
    falling asleep. It was impossible to keep a good focus. The lotus esp the full lotus really helps get the right mental state.

    These exercises and suggestions look really good, I will try them out! Thanks.

    I am a runner and with COVID I was doing 50 flights of stairs inside every day. Then after a couple of weeks of that the problems started.

    I'm not having knee pain in half lotus but I do get ankle pain. Is that normal discomfort?

    Just don’t do it. So many people who practice yoga end up needing knee and hip replacements and what for? Just to achieve a stupid pose?

    Great. I am unable to sit in full half lotus pose for long and if i manage to sit in Padmaasana I'm unable to maintain it for more than 5 minutes. Then whole day i suffer from knee pain….

    I often feel popping tendons in my front hips when I attempt this position. I will try it with a bolster under the buttocks and see if it helps. It's a "scary" feeling, as though the femur might dislocated or get "stuck" in the joint. Something to gently experiment with, I think.
