one needs to work on breathing too. doing padmasan with right breathing pattern untie many emotional and spiritual blockages. people who can not fold legs can also eventually do padmasan if breathing exercises done. but it takes time.

I do zazen, and being able to do full lotus really helps. My knee and hip have becone inflamed recently so I am looking at videos to try to se how to heal.
I think the original problm is due to exaggerating on stair climbs, plus sometimes sitting more than once per day. Plus, not enough stretching before hand and after. The explanations are helpful!

I have incredible tight hips and mainly in right leg. Causes lots of problems in my teaching of yoga as I have limited external rotation. Its so, so disheartening at times but I get around it. Even in Sukhasana my right knee is up high and left is down. Great explanation and another reason now i don't have to teach Lotus. Thank you.

I have torn both menisci. I don't know if any one thing caused it. I have no proof of when, how. I used to do lotus for 3 seconds, knowing not to stay in it because I knew my knees were awful. Once I tore severely the left knee I never did that again. Thank you for saying that. You are right. I'm no hero and it's not necessary to be one.

I can't help but wonder who's been teaching all these Yogis to sit in female Lotus position. There's a profound difference, the male Lotus is LEFT leg first, then RIGHT. Female Lotus is RIGHT first, then LEFT.

Does he mean people who do the motion wrong can not upward rotator their shoulder blade correctly, but just elevate more their shoulder blade? I'm a beginner. Can anyone explain it to me, thanks!

This action includes: External rotation of shoulder, full flexion of the shoulder AND upward rotation of the shoulder blades. Breath is helpful, but truly the issue here is that the upward rotation of the scapula happens when the arms move above the head. Asking the scapula to downwardly rotate while the arms are up is counterintuitive (and as he discusses here it puts the lats into a tug of war with the rotator cuff – LATS will win because they are more powerful and the rotators will suffer from it). It helps to consider the shoulder in its two distinct parts: The shoulder girdle and the shoulder blade. There are distinct movements for each and sometimes we just lump it all together because they work together and then we run into some cueing trouble. So in summary some cues I've found helpful to address the neck scrunching (once the arms are already overhead) that he's talking about are "Wrap the shoulder blades to the outer armpits" "Rotate the pinky line higher than the thumb line" and "Soften the base of the neck".

Thank you so much for discussing this topic. I never teach drop your shoulders when the arms are over head, and I wish more teachers would understand the implications this cue actually has on the body. I often think teachers don't really understand the anatomy and don't really know why they are actually cueing this to begin with, except that it's what they've heard so they pass on the message without question. It's kind of become a bit like a game of yogic chinese whispers. Keep spreading this message.

Not down, but forward. Dropping the shoulders compresses the spine, lifting the shoulders compresses the neck. What solves this dilemma is pushing the shoulders forward (protract the shoulder blades) which allows lengthening the spine, while freeing the neck at the same time.
