Thanks for checking out my video!

What are the pros and cons of online yoga teacher training? In this video, I share the upsides and downsides of my online 200-hour YTT experience as well as some of my favorite things I learned. The training I took was certified through the Yoga Alliance, and I’m SO grateful to have had this experience (especially during such a crazy time)!

My teachers are going to lead another online 200 hour YTT beginning January 16! If you’re interested in learning more about their training (which I HIGHLY recommend), email me at or send me a DM on Instagram @BalancingLaura and I’ll get you connected with Roger and Albina. 🙂

If you’re looking into online (or even in-person) yoga teacher trainings, this website is a GREAT resource:

Pros: 0:58
Cons: 5:00
Favorite Parts of the Training: 9:23

If you’ve gone through teacher training, I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments down below!

YTT are already very low level in the US so I cannot even imagine what online will look like. This is bullshit, just another money maker, and Yoga alliance is just here to make money. Wake up guys..

I love your channel! Thank you so much for all you do. I have done an in person and an online YTT and I thought I’d share my experiences. In person was hard to fit in and I was exhausted doing that and the office job as if he working weekends. You don’t realise how much energy you use up learning. That being said whilst I was very disciplined with the online classes and loved being able to drip a video or reading into my every day life, some people just never finish. Both in person and online required me to teach infront of the groups. Both were nerve wracking. The energy was different in both. In person at first I found it easier because I could adjust by touch, online, I had only my voice. However, I think online, my curing got better faster as did finding other ways to adjust. I also got a recording of each online lesson which if you can watch without cringing, you can assess yourself a lot. In both cases I got teacher feedback and participant feedback. In person if you need to demonstrate, you can show different angles and see you students in different angles and aspects too. Online, you just get a flat view. In person, you had to buy textbooks and you only got one shot at hearing the teacher. Online, it’s all provided and you get replays you can watch over. In person people turn up late and then have to rush off skewing the day (the teacher was 2.5 hoy late starting one day as “time is not a natural concept”). Online, they start and finish pretty close to timetables because people can catch up on the missing prices later. In person community is great. Online community can be great depending on the provisions. In person, people tend to pay attention more as they have only one shot of that information. Online, you get people who can’t be bothered to read information and ask the same questions over and over again because they don’t read what they should and start bugging people in their inboxes to help them out. In both scenarios, you can stay in touch with people and practice. How you are assessed in person, realistically the teacher probably saw my teach two complete sequences as she went around the room. Asked a couple of questions on one person’s posture and alignment. Looked over my shoulder at doodles. We did an anatomy quiz and had discussions on philosophy and Ayurveda. Online, I had to write out detailed sequences, explain themes, write up how each Asana should be done, provide alternatives, list what to look for, list all the ways to adjust. and provide a video of me teaching at least one other person for each one. I got detailed feedback and asked about my choices and thoughts in detail for each one I submitted. I had to a number of body and posture assessments. I had to do tests on A&P, philosophy, Ayurveda. I had to provide written reflections. I had regular contact with a mentor throughout. I also had to do a practice log and journal which you had to submit evidence eg partial video (time lapsed, what you did etc) I enjoyed both and value both experiences. But if I’m honest (and I never thought I would say this), the online one was far more thorough and I think made me a better teacher. I did it as a refresher but learnt more than I did first time around. It was also tougher but I don’t mind so much. However, it does vary from course to course. I’m sure there are in person courses I’d prefer and online courses I’d not find valuable at all.

Do you have any advice for a yoga teacher who isn't going to be taking the YTT training anytime soon? I've been offered an opportunity to instruct yoga at my crossfit gym and the owner is allowing me to since there are technically no requirements for yoga teachers. He has insurance to cover me and I have a personal training certification as well. I've been doing yoga for over 4 years now personally at home and in studios. Perhaps suggestions on the types of courses to study until I am able to pay for the training (it's just a lot of money right now to even consider it).

What do you think about how the online YTT programs are just as expensive as the in-person YTT programs? I would have thought online would have been cheaper.
Also, what advice do you have for Christians who are considering getting the YTT certification? I understand you may learn about other religions but are there things expected of a student that would make a Christian feel uncomfortable?

Thank you so much for this! I would really appreciate your feedback to this question. My soul wants to go deeper within and truly live the philosophy of yoga so I would love to do the teacher training for that and to practice it. Do you need to be deeply experienced/advanced in yoga to do training?

Some of these training are a lot more pricey than others. What makes them more expensive? Siddhi (included in your article) is really catching my eye because it is affordable and the teachings look really great, but do you think I would be doing myself a disservice if I do this training rather than some of the more pricey ones?
